In-Vitro Fertilization

In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a procedure wherein eggs from a woman’s ovaries are collected. And combined with the sperms outside the body. In vitro is a word of Latin origin meaning outside the living body and in an artificial environment. The aim is to form embryos.

The embryos are then either implanted in the womb. Or the embryos are placed in the laboratory to freeze and preserve for future use. And this is the process of cryopreservation preserving the embryos for many years.

What goes on in the IVF Theatre?

One of the phases of ART is IVF treatment. Where egg collections were performed. And the egg fluids are floating and pass through the hatch in the laboratory. The laboratory then takes the fluids under a microscope to search for the egg. Once the egg is found it is then combined with the sperm to form the embryo.

The embryo is then either inserted into the womb of the woman through the cervix. Or frozen through a process called cryopreservation. The embryos are stored in tanks that are called jewels and are freezing eggs using liquid nitrogen.

This process is called vitrification where the embryo and egg are frozen and preserved for future use. The normal procedure takes 13 hours but at our center, we can do it at a lesser turnaround time. From a medical point of view, to have a higher success rate for ART is to preserve embryos for 10 to 20 years. Yet, the law only allows embryos to preservation for 5 years.
